Should I Avoid Negative Thoughts?

Share the Love

There is a lot of talk within the Law of Attraction circle about negative thoughts. Many say you need to avoid them in order to use the LoA. This advice, even though presented in a good way, may not be accurate. Let’s research and see if you should avoid negative thoughts.

What is a Negative Thought?

This seems like an easy question to answer, doesn’t it. Just so we are all on the same page, let’s define what a negativeAccept Your Negative Thoughts

thought is. According to YourDictionary, “Negative thinking is a thought process where people tend to find the worst in everything, or reduce their expectations by considering the worst possible scenarios. This approach can allay disappointment in some situations; but, negative thinking tends to manifest into a pattern that can cause tremendous stress, worry, or sadness over time.”

By this definition, it is easy to understand why most people who practice the LoA would teach others to avoid negative thoughts. After all, negative thoughts can make you dread the future and attract things into your life that you would wish to avoid. Notice the last line?

“Negative thinking can manifest into patterns that can cause your body to stress and even lead to depression”.

That doesn’t sound like any place any sane person would want to be. I know that I wouldn’t choose to live there.

I am going to shed a brighter light on negative thoughts. I understand this is hard to believe, but negative thoughts are only the big-bad-wolf if you let them be. They actually provide tools that you can use to help you with your attempts of learning how to use the Law of Attraction.

Negative thoughts are great teachers of contrast.

Negative Thoughts Can be a Good Thing?

I am going to tell you, yes. You can choose to believe me if you want to, just let me explain a little more. Everything in life has to have a balance. Sometimes it is called yin and yang. One cannot live life without experiencing negative thoughts. They are natural and cannot be avoided. They shouldn’t be avoided.

Instead, negative thoughts should be accepted, noticed, and appreciated. They should be accepted for what they are (as negative thoughts), learned from and then let go. Just let them go to flutter out of existence. Negative thoughts help you become aware of the greatness in life.

Thank Your Negative ThoughtsWhat Negative Thoughts Can Teach You

Negative thoughts are great teachers of contrast. Just as we could not tell the what hot was without the contrast of cold or what soft is without the contrast of hard, negative thoughts teach us the contrast of what good or positive thoughts are. Without this contrast, we would never know what is good or not-so-good in our lives.

Negative thoughts also allow us to know what we want in our lives and what we don’t want. If something you experience in life brings up negative thoughts, then you have learned to avoid these things.

Your job is to notice what emotion this experience brings and to figure out how you can turn the thought into something you do want or a more positive thought. This is what I did in my story called “Hidden Thought of Gratitude”. You can read this earlier post to learn more about this story.

When Are Negative Thoughts Not-So-Good?

Negative thoughts gain their power to effect your life when you decide to dwell on them. When you let negative thoughts become your predominate thoughts, then you give them the power to manifest. When you allow worry to take over or dread to create a lasting emotion, then you need to find a way to snap back into a more positive way of thinking and living.Negative Thoughts Can Be Your Friend

We seem to be programmed by society and maybe through animal instinct, to be always fearful. We are always on the lookout for predators and things that are out to sabotage our lives. This seems to be a natural part of life. Maybe it comes from an instinct that other creatures are out to eat us. Maybe it comes from the belief that some people are wolves and others are sheep.

It doesn’t matter where our fear comes from in the long run. What matters is that we find a way past these ways of thinking and focus on a life filled with prosperity and abundance. We can do this by accepting our negative thoughts.

Accepting Negative Thoughts

Accept your negative thoughts for what they are. They are there to provide contrast and to guide you in the right direction. Do not try to avoid the thoughts. Just see them for what they are, accept them as part of your life, realize they do not define your life, learn their contrast, and then let them go. Do not dwell on them, do not ridicule yourself for having them, and do not put much focus on them. Just let them go. Let them flutter out of existence.

Accept your negative thoughts for what they are. They are there to provide contrast and to guide you in the right direction.

Conclusion

Even though you should not let negative thoughts predominate your every thought, it is not wrong to have them cross your mind. You don’t need to avoid them. What you need to do is learn from them by focusing on their contrast. If you find yourself thinking negative thoughts like, “I am fat and ugly,” just accept it.

Thank that thought for crossing your mind and then push in a new thought like, “I am working to become thin and attractive”. Let the negative thought that crossed your mind continue to cross and replace it with the more positive thought. Let that positive one become predominate by focusing on the new thought and adopting it.

The negative thought is actually your friend. It provides contrast that allows you to figure out what positive thoughts you actually want to have. Practice replacing your negative thoughts with more positive ones in this manner and you will soon notice that you are living the life you want: you will be living for the better.

  1. Great explanation! I bet there are many as me, who can’t get rid of “bad” thoughts and might even feel “guilty” for having them. Your view is much closer to reality than the exclusive “think only positively”.
I think it’s impossible to never ever have negative thoughts, but you may choose to stick to them or, as you say, smoothly replace them by some positivity. Going with a natural flow can be so much more manageable than forcefully stopping your thoughts. Thank for clearing this up.

I learned a long time ago that what you resist will persist. Negative thoughts are a natural part of life. We all have them. If you try to resist negative thoughts, then they will continue to persist in your life.
Glad you were able to understand the message I was trying to create ?
